The Dealio with Miriam
Where is TV heading towards nowadays, honestly. How low will they go? It's ridiculous how deep some producers are prepared to sink to attract an audience.
You've all seen There's Something About Miriam.... you've all laughed, you've all stared lock-jawed yet felt grotesque... yet you would rate the show an absolute hit.... But would you laugh though if you WERE the marine biologist, or the lifeguard who actually made-out with her?
It all started when the producers of "There's Something about Miriam" placed newspaper ads soliciting for men who wanted to participate in "the sexual adventure of a lifetime". Blokes who were "up for anything" were invited to apply. The winning contestant, the guy who triumphs in most of the physical challenges and impresses the lady, gets $24,000 and a week on a luxury yacht with the "J-Lo lookalike who's got it all".
Indeed, Miriam's got it all, including breast implants, testicles and a penis (mm yummy). So the joke's on these poor blokes who are jumping through hoops to win the attention of a woman "who's no ordinary woman".
Well, one thing's for sure.... the contestants who volunteered for "the sexual adventure of a lifetime" never signed up for the "few unexpected bits in her package".
Lucky you didn't apply, hey.
But my point is, that our society's morals are degrading. Remember "Australia's Funiest Home Videos"? Do you remember how loud you laughed when you saw that guy fall off a horse and broke his arm? Would you laugh so hard if you WERE that man? Honestly, comedy is becoming more and more dirty. What will they think of next?
Reality tv shows are becoming more and more popular though, but why? Because we as humans yearn to see the suffering of others and laugh at other's demise.... thats today's comedy...

Yeh, i agree that in today's society, comedy is at the expense of other's misfortunes. Will it it worse before it even gets better? I'm not sure. But if we took a glance at our group say Tuan and his sexual mis-adventures, it becomes the main conversation at our coffee spots right? We've no better really. I guess the focus is on the how far we're gonna take it. Let's face it, dick and fart jokes are here to stay.
It seems society has changed dramatically, young kids are exposed to things on TV withing TV shows and even cartoons these days... of sex, drugs, drinking....
wats the world coming to?
society has changed and will continue to become worst.....
blah
people who send in stuff to "australia's funniest home videos" do it voluntarily, and i think a lot of the time incidents where people break their limbs makes them realise things could have been a lot worse, and that might warrant them to look back and laugh.
like tofu said re: tuan, bad shit happens. but when you get through it all and look back, you gotta admit most of the time it's kind of funny. of course there are degrees of "bad shit" that happens, but the things we laugh at or find amusing tend to be those that we recover from, both physcially and emotionally.
i agree however, with the whole "miriam" thing that it's perverse and potentially traumatising for the guys invovled. producers of the tv show, and miriam him/herself are absolutre retards if they think that ratings and prize money are any justification for what they're putting the contestants through.
i dont think people laugh at what's going on in "miriam"; its a reality show, not a comedy. people watch them because the people on the shows are put through situtaions where their emotions - non-scripted or rehearsed - are put to the test. in "big brother" we saw the whole deal, and on "miriam" they're pushing it a bit further and seeing how guys who thought they were after a chick feel when they find out she is in fact a he.
people don't enjoy wathcing others suffer, i think its more to do with the concept that they're glad they're not in that situation. its a bit of a paradox, i admit, but i personally don't find "miriam" entertaining at all. and people's suffering - in recoverable ways - kind of funny in context. all the shit you see on television where people injure themselves, even seriously (ie shark attacks, or rollerblading mishaps), the people involved can look back and laugh.
humanity isn't sadistic, it just realises that hey, there are plenty of worse things that could happen.
